Mountain biking: Nation, Morrison winners at Three Peaks Enduro

Joseph Nation and Rae Morrison won the top grades at the Three Peaks Enduro mountain biking event in Dunedin over the weekend.

Nation (26), of Christchurch, claimed the overall prize in 44min 56sec, while Morrison (26), of Paraparaumu, won the women's grade in 52min 7sec.

The enduro event started out four years ago and has grown every year.

It began on Saturday with timed rides down Pineapple Track, part of Nicols Track and Mt Cargill while there were three timed runs down Signal Hill on Sunday.

The descents are the only parts timed but riders have to climb in between times to get to the top of the tracks which is unique for the enduro event, a format which has caught on right throughout the cycling world.

Nation won four of the six stages while Morrison won all of the six stages in the women's grade.

Dunedin's Leighton Kirk (23) took second place in 46.06sec while Queenstown's Jimmy Pollard bounced back from a thumb injury to round out the podium in his first race back.

Masters competitor Jo Perrott, of Nelson, was Morrison's nearest rival, coming in just over 5min behind with junior rider Phoebe Coers, of Wanaka, third in 59.06sec.
