Wanaka athlete Braden Currie secured his first European title in style yesterday.

Currie dominated Xterra Sweden to finish in front of his closest rival by nearly 5min.

He and pre-race favourite Dan Hugo, of South Africa, were neck and neck off the 30km mountain bike, but Currie came out of transition into the run with strong pace and put 3min on Hugo in the first 4km.

By the end of the 10km run, Currie had no need to look over his shoulder for the chasing pack as he finished in 2hr 13min 47sec.

Hugo finished 4min 29sec later, just under 1min ahead of Australian Ben Allen.

''As I pulled away from the run transition in first place, I knew it was going to be my day,'' Currie said.

''I'd felt good throughout the entire race and it felt easy to stick with Dan on the bike, which was a good feeling. Heading into the run, I knew I had a big advantage and was pretty happy to hammer it home.''

Currie produced a strong swim over the 1.5km course, which enabled him to exit the water in the leading bunch of four athletes.

As the water temperature was more than 20degC, the athletes were not allowed to compete in wetsuits.

A heart-in-mouth moment followed in the mountain bike transition when Currie's shoe disengaged from its pedal mount and he was forced to leap off, hastily buckle it on his foot and take off after the fast-disappearing leaders.

''I knew I had to catch them within the next 10 to 15 minutes or that was my race over, so I went hard and caught up to Dan.''

The two guns raced together on the extremely technical, tight 30km course near Stockholm. Currie was confident his trademark lightening-quick run would hand him the lead and he soon stormed away from Hugo.

Currie said beating one of the world's leading multisporters, and having wife Sally and son Tarn on hand, made for a rewarding day.

He has a well-earned break for the next fortnight, before travelling to Italy for his fourth European Xterra event on July 26.
