Wanaka triathlete Nicky Samuels has backed up last weekend's third placing in Sweden with another third, this time in the ITU World Championship Grand Final in Edmonton, Canada.

Samuels was just 10 seconds behind compatriot Andrea Hewitt, who was second, just 16sec behind winner Gwen Jorgensen, of the United States.

Jorgensen's victory was her fifth in the World Triathlon Series (WTS) this season, only the second athlete after Alistair Brownlee to do so.

The field was fairly tightly packed before a group of 17 - including four New Zealanders - formed on the first lap of the bike.

Samuels and Hewitt put in a hard shift on the six-lap bike leg before forging ahead in the first lap of the 10km run leg along with Sarah Groff.

However, Jorgensen's trademark strong finish saw her join Hewitt and Samuels on the third lap before clearing away to win her first world championship title.

''I am very happy to report that after picking up my first ever WTS podium in Sweden last weekend I managed to get my second in Edmonton today,'' Samuels said by email.
