Braden Currie just refuses to lose.

The Wanaka multisport star began his American campaign in familiar style with a win in the Xterra Southeast Championship in Alabama at the weekend.

It was an important victory as the event doubled as the United States off-road triathlon championship race.

Currie fought off a late challenge from 10-time Xterra national champion Josiah Middaugh to claim victory at the Oak Mountain State Park course.

Currie was thrilled to hold on for the win in 2hr 18min 23sec in the first of four United States-based Xterra races he will have this season.

''I was super stoked as it was a good tough event and I had to fight to the end,'' he said.

Chris Ganter (United States) was a distant third, finishing more than 6min behind Currie and defending champion Middaugh.

Currie (28) exited the 1.5km lake swim in fifth place and quickly made up some ground on the 30km mountain bike.

He rode most of the ''hilly, grunty'' course with Ganter, Middaugh catching them both near the end of the ride.

Middaugh and Currie then raced head to head for nearly the whole 10km trail run. It was only in the final 100m that Currie seized his chance and, with a burst of speed, passed his rival to break the tape.

''It was a great mental booster for me to be able to take the win as I still feel like I have plenty left in the tank,'' Currie said.

It was the Wanaka man's third straight Xterra victory, after he dominated the Asia-Pacific championships and the New Zealand championships. They followed his third consecutive win in the Coast to Coast.

Having recently travelled to the United States, Currie will now base himself in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, where he will put in some solid training blocks as he prepares for his next event, the Northwest Championship next month.

''My build-up was as good as I could have hoped for, but I feel like I've got a lot to improve on, with a good four-week block coming up.''
