Multisport: Quest director relishing new venue

It is not too late to enter the Adventure Quest, being held today at the Crown Terrace above Arrowtown.

Entries will be accepted for the event until just before the 10am race briefing.

Director Geoff Hunt said the event involved biking and walking or running.

A large field has entered, including elite athletes, family groups and orienteers.

"We have had excellent support from landowners on the Crown Terrace and we are excited about the new venue for the quest, which centres on a treasure hunt-style format.

"The area is steeped in early Wakatipu history and the scenery is fantastic. It's a great combination and it will open up some new territory for many competitors."

The race headquarters will be based on the property of Robina Bodle and Jeff Desbecker, longtime supporters of Southern Traverse events.

"The walking stage of the quest will be partly on their property, as well as on the lower slopes of the Crown Range," Hunt said.

He said the biking section would be "challenging but achievable" for all levels.

Competitors would drop from the terrace on to the Morven Ferry flats, leading to the banks of the Kawarau River and the lower Arrow River.

With clues and tags in the Tobins Track area, competitors would be able to do a complete loop, he said.

The Adventure Quest involves teams of two and requires good teamwork, orienteering and problem-solving, with a serious and social division for open, women's and mixed teams.
