College A proved it could handle the pressure when it came from behind to beat Phys Ed A 59-49 on Saturday.

Phys Ed took the early lead and looked to have settled into a rhythm, going into quarter time with a 15-11 lead.

Phys Ed's defensive end put the pressure on the College shooters, and goal defence Libby Drake pulled in several defensive rebounds.

College goal shoot Jamie Hume was impressive when she got the ball, but her team just could not get it to her enough to capitalise.

College called a time-out before halftime, and Stacey Peeters was injected into the game at centre. She added punch through the court and increased the urgency in her team, and the battle between her and Phys Ed opposite Lucy Heenan was keen.

Phys Ed led by seven goals at one stage but was up just 26-24 at halftime.

Phys Ed made changes across the court, tinkering with the shooting circle and adding a new wing attack and goal defence.

New goal attack Sophie Johns added movement to Phys Ed's attacking end and freed up space in the shooting circle nicely, but College would not be shaken off.

Libby Drake was put back to goal defence for Phys Ed, and College's Danielle Gray moved back to goal keep, making way for a new wing defence.

The tempo of the game had risen and Phys Ed went into the final quarter with the lead, 39-38.

In the final quarter, College took control of the match as its shooting end found its rhythm.

Hume became dominant under the post, and goal attack Olivia Bates worked to draw the defenders and open up the space.

The attacking end began to play with confidence, swinging the ball and releasing in a display that was pretty to watch.

Phys Ed was clearly missing its captain, influential defender Rebecca Purvis, and could not find a way to stop the late surge from College.

College coach Lauren Piebenga was happy with her team's performance in the second half.

''We controlled our own ball,'' she said.

In the other premier A game at the weekend, Southern Magpies thumped Southern Tui 75-38. The game between South Otago High School and University Albion A has been rescheduled.
