Netball: Steel preseason opener in Sydney

The Southern Steel will open its 2015 preseason campaign against the West Coast Fever in Sydney in February.

The match will be one of five games the Steel plays over a three-day preseason summer shootout, in which all 10 ANZ Championship teams will compete, starting on February 6.

A total of 25 games - some full-length and some half-length - will be played, with the Steel scheduled to play two full and three shortened games.

As well as the Fever, the Steel will play the Central Pulse, Adelaide Thunderbirds, Queensland Firebirds and Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic.

The shootout does not include a playoff format, but ANZ Championship general manager Andy Crook said it would provide teams an opportunity to ''fine tune'' their preparations ahead of the opening round, which starts on February 28.

The Steel's 12-strong squad starts preseason training in Invercargill on Monday, before breaking up over Christmas.

The Steel has also added another sponsor to the table ahead of next season, in the Southern Institute of Technology.
