Netball: Success for Dunedin sides

The Dunedin under-17 and under-19 representative teams had success at the Netball South invitational tournament in Gore on Sunday.

After the teams went through the Queen's Birthday tournament undefeated two weeks ago, both were in search of tougher opposition as preparation for the national championships.

Dunedin under-19's first game was against the South under-23 side featuring Sophia Fenwick, Gina Crampton, Storm Purvis, Brooke Leaver and Stacey Peeters from the Southern Steel.

After a good first half - it led by one at halftime - the Dunedin side fell off the pace in the second half and the South won 64-51.

The under-19 team's second game was against the Southland men's side. Dunedin won a physical game 36-28.

Under-19 coach Jo Morrison said she was happy the team got a lot out of the tournament.

''Pushing the under-23s like we did was fantastic considering the calibre of players they have. It was great to be able to play against them to push the girls.

''Being able to see combinations out on court was the main aim for the tournament and there will be plenty of competition for starting spots which is a great position to be in as a coach.''

The Dunedin under-17 side again went through the weekend undefeated.

Its biggest win was against the Southland under-19 side, ending the day on a high note by winning 41-24.
