Netball: Salter says Southern must work for second title

After 16 games and three rounds, the Southern Magpies and Phys Ed A will clash in today's Dunedin premier club final.

Southern is chasing back-to-back titles but it has been a long time between finals for Phys Ed.

It will be without shooter Jo Morrison for the final but coach Alice Wells still feels her side will get the job done.

''We spent a lot of time at training with Erin [Hughes] and just making sure that we give her the confidence to go out there and do her job,'' Wells said.

''I had to remind the girls at training on Thursday that it is just another game and we just want to go out there and do our best.''

Wells said her team's success through towards the end of the season had been built on a strong team defensive effort.

However, Southern is the only team Phys Ed has not beaten this season, and Phys Ed will have to work hard to shut down the Magpies' impressive shooting circle.

Southern has had an indifferent season. It has produced some fast, free-flowing netball but has also struggled to find consistency, due in part to a spate of injuries.

Coach Georgie Salter said Southern would need to bring some intensity to the final to win another title.

''We need to keep at them. Our strength is the ability to spread the ball with width and depth through court,' Salter said.

''My girls are a quiet bunch but I think they have a quiet confidence which will make them dangerous in the game.''

The playoff for third and fourth is between University-Albion and College A at 10.45am.
