Dunedin coach Deb Tasi Cordtz says her team is ''itching'' for next week's national championships in Wellington to start.

Minus a light training session tomorrow, the team has wrapped up its preparations for the week-long tournament and is set to fly to Wellington on Sunday.

''We've done all that we can,'' Tasi Cordtz said.

''We're just kind of itching to get out on court, and we want to hit Monday nice and sharp.''

Dunedin is pitted in pool B against North Harbour, Hutt Valley, Wanganui and Hawkes Bay, and will open the 17-team tournament against North Harbour on Monday morning.

Harbour is set to be the biggest challenge in the pool.

The top two teams advancing to the quarterfinals.

''The others are a bit of the unknown, really,'' Tasi Cordtz said.

''But they don't know a lot about us either. We haven't got too many big-name players this year, so it will be a nice wee surprise package from us, I would imagine.''

While newly-signed Steel players Jamie Hume and Abby Erwood are in the team, other Dunedin-based franchise players - Gina Crampton, Stacey Peeters, Storm Purvis, Te Paea Selby-Rickit and Brooke Leaver - are unavailable.

Tasi Cordtz has named Hapai Selby-Law as captain, while Sophie Napper - one of four players from last year's squad - is vice-captain.

The team had been battling the flu the past few weeks, but was now fully fit, Tasi Cordtz said.

''Training has been good. Everyone is vying for positions, so it's really good to have that friendly competitiveness within the team.''

Dunedin beat Southland 60-42 and the Southland men's team 52-44 in warm-up matches last month, before losing 48-38 to Christchurch earlier this month.

It also played a friendly match against a team which included Silver Ferns shooter Jodi Brown, Crampton and Selby-Rickit at the Edgar Centre last night.
