Netball: Team always confident, shooter says

The Steel's win may have surprised many pundits but the home side always believed it could do the job, star shooter Jhaniele Fowler-Reid said.

Fowler-Reid, who played her 50th match for the franchise in the win over the Firebirds on Saturday, said the side had never doubted itself.

"We believe in ourselves. We know these teams are very hard to play and we just have to put our best games out there so, yeah, we have confidence,'' she said.

While many observers would have seen this win as confirmation the Steel can have a genuine tilt at this year's title, Fowler-Reid said the side did not need any convincing.

"I think we've had the confidence since the start, because why not believe in yourself?

"So we have the confidence that we can go all the way. It's going to be a hard road ahead but I think we can overcome it.''

Fowler-Reid said playing her 50th match for the franchise was an honour.

"Not many payers get to achieve this, especially with just one team, so it's a pretty awesome and humble feeling.''

Playing the match in front of her home fans added to the occasion, she said.

"That makes it even more special, especially knowing that we came out with the win.''

● Netball South kept its final hopes alive in the national league with a 60-44 win over Northern at the Edgar Centre on Saturday.

The team has one more game to play, against Central next Sunday, in the regular season and is right in the running to make the final, to be played on June 26 in Auckland.
