College A beat University Albion A 53-41 in the second round of premier A grade games at the Edgar Centre last night.

College was boosted by the availability of Southern Steel player Jamie Hume, who made her presence on court felt instantly, slotting the first goal of the game.

This lead quickly shot out to three goals but it was not long before University tightened the deficit to within one.

College extended its lead to four goals midway through the quarter but again University fought back to within one goal thanks to tight defence and strong rebounding.

A turnover by University defender Samara Hollows, which was later backed up by midcourter Rachel Horrocks, allowed their team to level the scores.

The scores remained even going into the second quarter but it was College which came out with an early two-goal lead before University, once again, tied it up.

University was slick through court and was rewarded for its efforts, taking the lead for the first time in the game midway through the quarter.

Shooter Bridget Thayer was confident shooting long-range attempts for University and was supported nicely by Olivia van Diepen, despite tough pressure from their opponents.

College's defence was tight throughout the court and evened the scores to 17-17 in the second quarter.

Four quick goals by College allowed it to regain the lead thanks to shooters Kiana Pelasio and Hume, who formed a nice partnership in the circle.

College led University 23-17 at half time after a scoring nine unanswered goals.

Both teams started strongly in the third quarter, fighting to gain possession, but College had a slight edge, taking the lead to eight goals.

Sophie Napper and Demi Forshaw helped make it two more as they both collected intercepts for their team.

However, University was relentless in its defence and picked up plenty of turnovers throughout the court.

Horrocks worked tirelessly off the ball and around the circle edge, scooping up loose ball and feeding her shooters well.

This led to a resurgence by University, bringing the score to 31-27 late in the third quarter.

College had a five-goal lead at the start of the final quarter and pushed this out to 11 goals by the halfway mark.

Pelasio was confident under the hoop, nailing long-range shots to secure her team's advantage.

University fought on defence and scored three quick goals to lessen the margin but College was tight through court and held on to eventually win by 12 goals.
