Netball: Peeters available for South’s knockout game

South will again have the services of Steel player Stacey Peeters for its virtual semifinal national league clash against Central in Invercargill tomorrow.

The Steel-contracted player is eligible to play in the national league competition but has turned out for the southern side only twice this season.

She played in the side's last two matches, contributing to convincing wins over Mainland and Northern.

Those wins have put South into third place going into the final round.

The top two teams will contest the inaugural final in Auckland next weekend.

Central is in front in the competition and guaranteed a final spot, meaning a South win tomorrow would set up a rematch between the two sides at the Trusts Arena next Sunday.

If South loses, Central and Northern will contest the final.

South coach Lauren Piebenga said there was added excitement among the squad given the importance of tomorrow's match.

"We've got a bit of momentum at the moment, coming off two convincing performances, firstly against Mainland, then against Northern.

"But we're just trying to keep our processes in check.''

Northern was leading the competition when South put it away 60-44 last week in Dunedin, and Piebenga said that was probably the team's best performance.

"I think things fell into place for us throughout the court last week.

"We focused on ball retention and making sure we scored off turnovers and we managed to do that quite well, which was pleasing.''

Central edged South 56-55 the last time they met, in Wellington in round six.

The side from the capital was strong at both ends of the court and South would have to lift a notch if it was to come out on top tomorrow, Piebenga said.

"We were happy with our performance last time, even though we lost.

"We've reviewed that game and have been looking at ways we can shut them down.''

South will again have the services of Steel squad members Jamie Hume and Abby Erwood, who have yet to debut for the top side, but fellow Steel player Brooke Leaver is not expected to be available.

Peeters will sit on the bench in the Steel's ANZ Championship clash against the Magic tomorrow and can play a total of 60 minutes across both matches.
