A national trophy could be on its way south for the first time since 2013 as South looks to secure the inaugural national league title in Auckland.

The southern side will battle Central in tomorrow's final at the Trusts Arena after finishing top of the standings in the five-team tournament.

South, which has won five of its eight matches and picked up bonus points in each of its three losses, beat Central 59-43 in its last round-robin match in Invercargill last week.

The two sides pipped Northern for a place in the final. The third-placed side also recorded five wins but gained only one bonus point.

The last time a national senior trophy was in the South was when Otago A won the national championship in Dunedin three years ago, after it beat Hamilton 54-53 in the final at the Edgar Centre.

Otago also won the division one national championship in Tauranga the previous year.

A Dunedin side competed in a restructured tournament last year and in 2014, finishing sixth and seventh respectively, before the inception of the five-team national league this year.

South coach Lauren Piebenga said the side was excited about the chance of making history in the new competition.

"It's a really good feeling. We're really very proud of what we're putting out on court, and we're proud that we had a steep hill to climb in order to get to the final and we were able to get there.

"We're confident in each other, and it would be nice to push through to the finish line.''

South goes into tomorrow's final on the back of three convincing wins, including an impressive display last week in which it pulled away from Central to claim the final quarter 17-6 in a must-win game.

"We were a little bit slow to start and we didn't develop our own game,'' Piebenga said.

"It was only through the third quarter we started to find a bit of our own form.''

The win against its final opponent gave the side confidence but it would need to be more consistent to win the final, she said.

"It is nice to know we've done it before, but we're also well aware that finals netball throws up all sorts of different variables.

"Central is a physical and strong side that's really well-coached.

"We'll need to go in there all guns blazing from the start.''

South should again have the services of Steel players Stacey Peeters, Abby Erwood and Jamie Hume for the match.

The trio will sit on the bench for the Steel's clash with the Vixens in Invercargill today and fly to Auckland tomorrow.

They are allowed to play a total of 60 minutes in a 48-hour period, so their involvement in tomorrow's match will depend on how much court time they see with the Steel.
