Hawkes Bay schools are expected to maintain their dominance
at the New Zealand secondary schools orienteering
championships that start in Dunedin today.
In Auckland last year, Napier Boys' was the top boys school
and Napier Girls' the top girls school.
The two schools also won the Silva Premier Award for boys and
girls schools.
The favourite in the senior boys event is Pearson Williams
(Napier Boys'), who won the intermediate boys' title last
year.
The intermediate girls title was won by Lauren Turner (Samuel
Marsden College) last year.
The most competitors from any region at this year's
championships come from Hawkes Bay with 70 competitors from
Napier Boys', Napier Girls', and Havelock North.
There are also 45 competitors from Auckland, 40 from
Christchurch and 20 from Otago.
There are 240 competitors from 75 schools in this year's
event at three Dunedin venues.
The sprint event will be held today from Clyde St and the
winner is expected to take about 15 minutes. The finish is on
Harbour Tce. The start times are from 3pm to 4pm.
Control sites for this event are expected to include benches,
litterbins, sculptures and other objects common to urban
landscapes.
The long distance event will be held tomorrow on the Cuttance
Forestry Block in the Wenita Forest. The course covers
forestry and farmland. The start times are from 10.30am to
11.30am.
The three-team relay event will be held at Seacliff on
Saturday and will feature a mass start.
The senior boys relay event was won by Napier Boys' last year
and the senior girls event by Chilton Saint James.
