Curling: Beckers dominate first day of champs

The Becker family stood out on the first day of the New Zealand curling championships in their home town rink at Naseby yesterday.

Sean Becker and sister Bridget demonstrated the benefits of recent international competition by dominating the rink.

They teamed up to win a silver medal in the mixed doubles at the world championships in Russia last April, when they lost to the host nation 9-7 in a thriller.

Sean Becker had a strong team that included New Zealand representatives Warren Kearney, Kris Miller and Warren Dobson.

The Maniototo-based team beat Kenny Williamson (Auckland) 12-3 and Sam Miller (Maniototo) 11-3.

It will be a busy weekend for Kearney, who is captain of the Pirates premier team, which has a must-win game against Southern in the Dunedin premier rugby competition.

Bridget Becker skipped the Maniototo team of Brydie Donald, Marisa Jones and Natalie Campbell that beat Chelsea Farley (Auckland) 10-2 and Lucy Harris (Maniototo) 12-3.

There was more success for the Becker family because Sean and Bridget's mother, Wendy Becker, skipped a composite team with Aucklanders Elizabeth Matthews, Christine Bewick and Pauline Farra to beat Brittany Taylor (Auckland) 13-4.

New Zealand representative Dan Mustapic (Dunedin) skipped a composite team - with Kenny Thomson (Auckland), Lorne de Pape (Te Awamutu) and Doug Charko (Auckland) - to victory over Alan Langille (Auckland) 8-4.
