Joanna Ma started playing table tennis when she was 8 and
now, at 50, she has picked up a bucketful of medals.
Ma, who arrived in Dunedin from China about 10 years ago, was
part of a successful New Zealand side which journeyed to
Melbourne for the Australian veterans table tennis
championships.
Ma (50) won the over 50 years women's singles, the over 50
years women's doubles and the over 40 years women's teams
event. She also won bronze medals in the over 50 years mixed
doubles, the over 40 years women's doubles and the over 40
years women's singles.
She said the competition was tough. Ma came from the
northeastern city of Liaoyang and started playing the game
with her family when she was 8. But she stopped played for
about 19 years and resumed only in 2005.
Playing three times a week helped her sharpen her play, as
did having a table at home, she said.
