Otago has broken a 20-year drought with a stunning win over
Canterbury at the Jefferies Cup men's softball tournament in
Christchurch today.
Led by a spectacular performance from Ben Watts, Otago has
beaten the formidable Canterbury Red Sox 3-0 in the opening
game.
Watts, the finest Otago-developed player in years, smashed a
home run with brother Cam on base to give Otago a 2-0 lead in
the bottom of the first inning.
Ben Watts also pitched the full game, holding Canterbury
scoreless and to just three hits.
An insurance run in the fourth inning gave Otago a first win
over its powerful neighbour since 1992.
