Sean Becker proved his class under pressure when he drew the shot to win the bronze medal for New Zealand with his last rock.

The New Zealand skip drew the shot to the middle of the circle with his last stone on the extra end to put the New Zealand team of Warren Dobson, Rupert Jones, Scott Beck and Becker on the podium.

New Zealand beat Korea 7-6 in a dramatic play-off for the bronze medal at the Pacific Curling championships at the Maniototo Curling International rink yesterday.

Korea had one shot on the 10th end and the New Zealand skip called for a measure on the second shot which could have been in Korea's favour.

But Korean third Kim Soo-hyuk accidently kicked the stone off the ice.

"He had a brain-freeze when other people were clearing the stones," Becker said.

"The rules state that if the stone is taken out of play it doesn't count. It worked in our favour."

It was an even extra end and Becker (33) had the chance to win the game by drawing into the centre of the circle.

The Maniototo farmer steadied himself by telling his team-mates it was just another practice stone.

"I let it go and it went where it was supposed to go," he said.

Becker would have liked another colour of medal, but was satisfied with bronze.

"I'm proud of the way out guys played all week," he said. "We are amateurs and were playing against teams of professionals from the other countries.

New Zealand finished level at the top of the round-robin competition with Korea and China with seven wins. It was relegated to third spot on the countback.

It played defending champion China in the semifinals and was beaten 8-3 and 8-5 in the two games.

The New Zealand women's team finished strongly and just failed to reach the semifinals when beaten by Japan 11-8 in its last round-robin game.

It finished fourth behind China, Japan and Korea. Only three women's teams went to the play-offs.
