Curling: Secondary titles decided

Otago Girls' High School and Maniototo Area School claimed the South Island secondary schools titles recently.

The Otago Girls' side of Emma Sutherland, Mhari-Bronte Duncan, Heloise Fitzpatrick and Diana Yeritsyan reversed the result of the 2013 final to beat Maniototo in the gold medal match at the Dunedin Ice Stadium.

Maniototo dominated the preliminary stages, beating the top Otago Girls' team 10-2 on the way to a 5-0 clean sweep in the round robin.

But the Dunedin school struck form in the game that counted, winning the first five ends to take the title 6-3.

Michelle Bong's Otago Girls' No2 side beat St Hilda's Collegiate (Jamie McKenzie) 10-1 for the bronze medal.

Maniototo's Simon Neilson, Josh Whyte, Matthew Neilson and Ben Smith - winners of the New Zealand under-21 title a month ago - dominated the boys competition, winning all their games.

Maniototo beat Otago Boys' High School (Jeff McAlpine) 9-2 in the final.

Josh Fogo's John McGlashan Red beat East Otago High School (Geoff Bartrum) 10-2 in the bronze medal match.
