Australian football: Riot pair's championship form earns them national selection

Otago Riot captain Logan Toomer and team-mate Dan Benny have been selected for the New Zealand Hawks.

The pair were picked on the back of their form at the national provincial championship in Wellington at the weekend, which Canterbury won.

Both were members of the Hawks side which finished third at the International Cup in Australia in August.

The Riot will have to wait another year to win its first national provincial game after three heavy defeats.

After opening with a big loss to Canterbury on Saturday, it lost 48-9 to Auckland and 59-20 to Wellington on Sunday.

Tom McBride was named Otago's best player at the national championships, and is in the Hawks wider training squad.

The national side is scheduled to play against the Australian Institute of Sport team in Wellington in January, before playing a couple of games against a South Pacific representative side in April.
