Curling: Sweet sweep

New Zealand beat Australia 14-4 and is fourth in the standings at the halfway point with two wins and three losses.

The New Zealand men's team also beat Australia yesterday, 5-4, to record its first win of the week.

However, it is last on the competition standings.

Men's and women's teams from those two countries, as well as China, Japan and South Korea, are vying for top honours in the under-21 contest, being staged at Maniototo Curling International.

The gold medallists from the event will gain a place at the 2015 World Junior Championship in Estonia in March.

Competition in the Pacific-Asia contest began on Monday and semifinals, finals and medal ceremonies will be held on Saturday.

Maniototo curlers Simon Neilson, Luke Steele, Matthew Neilson, Josh Fogo, Josh Whyte, Holly Thompson and Jessica Smith are in the national teams.
