Baseball: Former pitcher spreading word on NZ tour

A little slice of Major League Baseball will make a rare appearance in Dunedin on Monday.

Former Kansas City Royals and Chicago White Sox pitcher DJ Carrasco will pass through the South as part of an MLB ambassador tour of New Zealand.

He is scheduled to participate in a lecture at the University of Otago on Monday, followed by skills sessions at St Mary's School (1pm-2pm), the University Oval (4pm-5.30pm) and Ellis Park (6pm-7.30pm).

Carrasco (37) and wife Autumn are travelling through New Zealand, running clinics and generally spreading the baseball word.

He has also been instrumental in New Zealand player Te Wera Bishop signing a minor league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Carrasco made his Major League debut for the Royals in 2003, and later played for the Arizona Diamondbacks, the White Sox, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the New York Mets.

He finished with a career record of 24 wins and 21 losses.
