Special Olympics: Good turnout for National Winter Games

Forty-eight competitors from 17 clubs competed in the seventh four-yearly Special Olympics National Winter Games, at the Cardrona Alpine Resort this week.

The games, run in ideal conditions, wrapped up on Wednesday, a day early before deteriorating weather.

Sport manager at Cardrona Graham Dunbar said the athletes competed in super giant slalom, giant slalom and slalom ski and snowboard events.

Success at the games can lead to a place in the team for the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria in March 2017.

Most of the top honours in the super G went to North Island athletes, but Otago athletes to feature included: John Halliday, division 2 snowboard advanced super G, 54.13sec, 1; Craig Torrance, Alpine advanced super G, 45.49sec, 3; Benjamin Blanche, division M3 Alpine advanced super G, 54.49sec, 1; Nathan Symister, division M4 Alpine advanced super G, 56.30sec, 1 ; Bradley Caffell, division M4 Alpine advanced super G, 56.75sec, 2.
