The Otago Daily Times Online looks back at the week in sport.

Mourinho signs with Manchester United

In sport most rumours remain just that, a rumour. In this case though, Jose Mourinho has signed on to be Manchester United's new manager, after months of speculation the move would happen. Ever since being sacked from his role at Chelsea it was suggested the man dubbed 'the special one' would take over from Louis van Gaal to help return United to glory. Van Gaal was sacked two days after winning the FA Cup in an otherwise disappointing season, with Mourinho taking the reins.

Between the legs two balls The Dunk King

The NBA slam dunk contest creates headlines, but for the most part, the world's best dunkers don't play at basketball's highest level. On television show 'The Dunk King' many of the sport's best athletes, that are otherwise unknown, compete to win $100,000. Porter Maberry (5' 5" tall), won the event, jumping over NBA legend 7-footer Shaquille O'Neal. The finals also included this gem from Young Hollywood.

The streaming debate

Live streaming of sport was in the headlines this week after it was reported 100,000 people watched Joseph Parker's fight against Carlos Takam via a Facebook stream last weekend. After Dean Lonergan expressed his disgust at the stream, which allowed people to view an event that otherwise cost $50, many fans hit back suggesting Lonergan was behind the times. If nothing else it shows where things are at in regards to live sports coverage and it may be this that acts as Sky TV's biggest competitor in the New Zealand televised sports market.

Stanley Cup finalists found

The Pittsburgh Penguins and San Jose Sharks will compete for the NHL's Stanley Cup, after both teams won their conference finals series this week. The Sharks won their series in six games against the St Louis Blues, winning the sixth game 5-2. Meanwhile the Penguins were taken to seven games against the Tampa Bay Lightning and emerged 2-1 victors.

Draymond's kick on Steve

Steven Adams has been creating plenty of buzz with his performances in the NBA Playoffs for the Oklahoma City Thunder. On Monday he was the centre of the basketball world's attention, alongside Draymond Green, after Green kicked Adams in the groin. The kick was found to be accidental and Green escaped suspension for an offence that curiously saw Dahtay Jones of the Cleveland Cavaliers suspended a day earlier.

Highlanders lose week before break

After three outstanding weeks, the Highlanders were brought back down to earth with a 27-20 loss to the Hurricanes on Friday night. The game was played in awful conditions, making for an error-filled encounter in which the Highlanders struggled to execute. Despite that they fought back from 17-7 down at halftime to have the scores tied at 20-20, before Ardie Savea scored on fulltime. The loss sees the Hurricanes move ahead of the Highlanders, who maintain a playoff position in the overall standings as the competition goes on a three-week break.
