Table tennis: Otago men claim title

The Otago men won the big prize at the South Island team championships in Timaru over the weekend.

The men's side had a 4-3 victory over Canterbury in the final.

Down 2-1, the Otago doubles combination of Julian Molzberger and Ben Duffy battled hard to secure a crucial win over Ivo Mikulec and Craig Dye.

Molzberger easily defeated Karl Samson and Wang Qi lost to Mikulec leaving Duffy to play Dye for the match. Duffy came from behind to win an exciting match, comfortably winning the fifth game to take the title which Otago last won in 2012.

Other Otago teams to gain titles were the under-13 girls B team and the veteran Otago A team.

The South Canterbury Open was also held and Molzberger won the men's grade, beating Qi in the final. Molzberger and Duffy won the open doubles title, beating Tom Henderson and Jordon Mills, both Otago juniors, in the final.

John Fogarty, the fourth member of the Otago men's team, won both the over-40 and over-50 years grade and Miao Xianning won the over-40 women's singles.

Tavish Voight saved his best form for last and won the under-18 boys title.
