Boxer Shane Cameron will be heading to a doctor today to have his right hand checked out.

On Saturday, Cameron defeated American journeyman Robert Davis in Gisborne by technical knockout in the 11th round to successfully defend his IBF Pan Pacific boxing title.

Cameron hurt his hand in training more than a month ago and while nothing was broken, he was told to rest it.

"That was obviously out of the question because I was in training. It just had swelling in all the wrong places from consecutive punches," he said.

During his fight on Saturday, Cameron caught Davis with plenty of rights early on.

"I was catching him with those rights in the first three rounds and it really got sore so I had to back off a bit," Cameron said.

"It eliminated me from throwing that right hand otherwise I would have got him out of there much quicker."

Cameron was reluctant to talk about the injury after the fight, saying he preferred not to moan: "It just needs some physio and time."

Cameron is now planning a couple of weeks off to spend time with his daughter Georgia and girlfriend Casey doing just about anything but boxing.

"It was certainly a very special fight for me and my family," he said.

Cameron wasn't the only one who stepped from the ring wounded after Saturday's fight.

Davis is said to have a cracked rib and busted ear drum.
