Maniototo made it two from two in the latest round of the Central Otago rugby competition by beating Alexandra at home 18-13 in a closely contested match.

In windy conditions at Ranfurly, the visitors failed to use the wind to their advantage in the first half and trailed by three at the break 8-5.

Tries in the first half came from Triton Bain for Alexandra and James Becker for the home side.

In the second half Maniototo played for territory and used the wind well, cashing in with a second try to Paul Docherty.

Both sides had stand-out performances from their fullbacks, Danny Van der Voot for Alexandra and Craig Patterson for Maniototo, while first five-eighth Thomas Huddleston controlled the game well for the home side.

At Clyde, Arrowtown notched up its second win of the young season by accounting for Clyde-Earnscleugh 35-18.

The score was hardly a true reflection of the match as it was a hard-fought and gritty game, with both forward packs dominating proceedings.

Arrowtown managed to score four tries after sustained pressure finally took its toll on the home side's defence.

First five-eighth Reece Winter scored two tries along with number 8 Dan Isefo and Andy Laughton for Arrowtown, while lock Corey Crosby, flanker Sam Manson and halfback Jai Baxter picked up tries for Clyde.

Rangy blindside flanker Daniel Dodds along with Winter were shining lights for the winning side.

Wakatipu gave Cromwell a lesson in Queenstown, punishing them 49-12 and scoring eight tries along the way.

Number 8 Ben Blakely was in devastating form for the home side, breaking the first-up tackle at regular intervals and off-loading to his support.

He ran hard off the back of the scrum and off short passes from the first five-eighth and set up a number of tries for the Queenstown side.

Hooker Tom Gray and flanker Cole Tewhairangi had strong games in the Wakatipu pack.

Cromwell started slowly, allowing three tries before number 8 Matt Reid sprinted 20m to finish a counterattack and give the visitors hope going into the second half.

But Cromwell could not recover and continually dropped off tackles around the fringes, Wakatipu eventually running away with the match in the second half and getting its season back on track.

Upper Clutha continued its club rugby revival by beating the Omakau-based side Matakanui in Omakau 27-10.

In a windy affair, the home side did not take full advantage of the wind and squandered a 10-8 half-time lead, letting Upper Clutha in for 19 unanswered second-half points, including three tries.

The forward packs for both sides were fairly evenly matched, Simon Grant and locking partner Dan Thurlow featuring heavily in all facets, with Grant scoring Matakanui's lone try.

Upper Clutha's dominance came through its back play, with wingers Willie Scurr and Nathan Simon touching down along with first five Byron Clark, who also kicked two conversions and a penalty.

Blindside flanker Tane Tawera was the man of the match, making and breaking tackles throughout the contest.

Bowls

The Wanaka Bowling Club played host to the Champion of Champions Men's Triples during the week, with Arrowtown and Roxburgh battling it out in the final.

An extra end was needed to find a winner as both sides could not be separated and with that extra end, Roxburgh managed the win by 15 points to 14.

In the women's Champion of Champions Fours held in Hawea, Arrowtown featured once again, taking on Alexandra in the final.

For the fourth year in a row, the Alexandra side was victorious.

Union took the Borton Cup, the symbol of supremacy in North Otago senior club cricket, with an 84-run win over defending champion Oamaru at Whitestone Contracting Stadium on Saturday.

Oamaru won the toss and asked Union to bat.

Although David Sewell struck the pads on numerous occasions in his first spell, success was hard to come by as Union batted stolidly to be 58 for three after 15 of the 45 overs, losing openers Antony Cromwell (21) and Duncan Drew (15) early in the innings.

Jeremiah Shield joined Glynn Cameron at the crease and took Union through to 78 for three after 20 overs.

Shields was run out for 17 as Union slumped to 94 for four with 20 overs remaining.

Cameron was joined by veteran Mark Wilson and this pair added 79 runs for the fifth wicket before Wilson was dismissed for 40.

Cameron was eventually run out for 47 as Union made 198 for the loss of eight wickets at the end of the 45 overs. Sewell was the best of the Oamaru bowlers, taking three for 22 off ten overs.

Oamaru lost Robbie Hill (3) and Jamie Ferris (10) to be 24 for two after six overs.

Oamaru struggled to build batting momentum as wickets fell regularly to reach 80 for five after 29 overs.

Only David Sewell (32) and Ben Coleman (21) showed any resistance as the last five wickets fell for 34 runs, leaving Oamaru stranded at 114 all out in the 39th over.

Cameron completed a fine double, taking four for 22 off ten overs, at one stage sitting on a hat trick, while Paul Johnston and Phil Crossan chimed in with three for 31 and two for 11 respectively.

North Otago club rugby sides made a clean sweep in the second round of the combined competition with Dunedin premier two clubs.

Kurow made it two wins in a row by scoring 13 points in each half to beat University B 26-8.

Ryan O'Connor kicked a first-half penalty for University B and Matt Abbott scored an unconverted try in the second half.

Winger Ofa Fatai ran in a hat trick of tries as Athletic hammered Kaikorai 61-7.

Piling on 33 points in the first half, Athletic was never pressed.

Athletic added three further tries late in the half.

Simi Fuluasou was in superb form, converting eight of the nine Athletic tries.

Halfback Hamish McKenzie and first five-eighth Jason Mavor scored early tries in Valley's 32-14 win against Zingari-Richmond.

Eight minutes into the second half, winger Daniel van der Salm scored for Nathan Cunningham to convert.

Cunningham, with a try, a conversion and a penalty, made the game safe for Valley, with Blair Smith adding a late unconverted try.

For Zingari-Richmond Ray Tolazo and James Kent scored tries, with Jeremy Burton converting both tries.

Maheno may have won 32-19 against Harbour, but it may well have lost dynamic flanker Ross Hay, who was taken to hospital with a suspected broken hand.

Brendan Gray a 19-year-old US under-20 representative made an immediate impact at halfback for Maheno, kicking a penalty which, with a late Hay try, gave Maheno an early 13-0 lead.

Harbour cut that lead back to a solitary point by halftime and early in the second half took a 19-18 lead.

Maheno finished the stronger of the two, with late tries to midfielder Mike Mullins and lock Andrew Fisher, with Gray adding the conversions to give him a tally of 12 points for the game.

The boot of Excelsior first five-eighth Jason Forrest was the difference between the two teams as Excelsior took the honours over Dunedin 23-18 after leading 17-10 at halftime.

Dunedin outscored Excelsior three tries to two, but 13 points from the Forrest boot gave the visitors the win.

Tries to front-rower Uhila Malafu and winger Satua Siale in the first half gave Excelsior the edge, with two second-half penalties from Forrest holding out Dunedin. Alhambra-Union held Old Boys to a 12-0 half-time lead, but four second-half tries, with Lemi Masoe adding to his first-half effort and first five-eighth Tai Aholeilei getting a couple as well as adding three conversions, took the home side through to a 38-5 win.

Prop Tony Fislau scored the sixth try late in the game.

Owaka caused the upset of the day when they got home 20-17 against Toko after being down 5-3 at half-time.

This was a very even game, with Owaka winning over Toko for the first time in 11 years, taking the Reg Phillips Trophy home to Owaka.

Players to stand out for Owaka were Benny Maguire at number 6 and Matt Sadgrove on the wing.

For Toko, Tim Howie had a splendid game in the pack.

Sean Tauti had another strong game at number 8.

For Clutha, Braden Glover and Blake Korteweg had steady games.

Crescent forwards dominated the second spell and posted a 39-12 win over Clinton at Kaitangata.

A much-improved performance by Crescent saw them run in six tries.

For Crescent, the Lesa brothers had very good games in the pack, while in the backs, Tony Phillips at first five and Craig Buchanan in midfield gave strong performances.

Clinton never gave up, with Craig McKenzie (number 7) and Brad Lapthorn (number 8) standing out.

Another good game came from lock Josh Monks.

Lawrence continued on their winning way with a 24-0 win over Clutha Valley after leading 19-0 at half-time.

Using the strong wind at their backs, Lawrence looked as though they would run away with the game, but Valley stuck to their task in the second spell, and excellent defence, coupled with some brilliant tackling, halted many Lawrence attacks.

Lawrence only scored two tries, but the boot of Sam Young was on song, landing four penalties and two conversions from seven attempts.

For Lawrence, Owen Ankers, Jimmy Hill and Junior Maiono led the forwards well, while in the backs, Lex Kaleca, Sam Young and Sam Cross at fullback were always dangerous on attack.
