Paralympics: Medallists head Para-cycling team

A 10-strong team headed by Paralympic medallists Phillipa Gray, Laura Fairweather and Fiona Southorn will contest the UCI Paracycling road world cup and road world championships in Canada in August.

Gray and her Fairweather (pilot) won a full sweep of London - gold, silver, bronze - as well as setting a new world record and Southorn claimed bronze in the 3000m pursuit.

They will be joined in Canada by former Paralympic runner Kate Horan who won silver at the Beijing Games in 2008 and who has recently moved into cycling.

"I'm loving the new challenge that cycling has brought," Horan said. "I'm very excited to be selected for my first Para-cycling world champs."

The team includes a number of talented hand cyclists such as Tiffiney Perry, Jonathan Nelson and Brendon Stratton who qualified after strong performances at the recent Australian Paracycling road nationals. Tim Williams rounds out the group after impressive performances at the BikeNZ club road national champs.

"We are very excited about this team as we believe we have a great mix of experience and enthusiasm," coach Brendon Cameron said. "This team highlights the recent work that has been done following on from London to ensure that we have developing athletes coming through. Competing at international events such as these are vital on our road to Rio."
