The Canterbury Jockey Club meeting scheduled for Riccarton on
Saturday week is to go ahead after engineers gave the
racecourse the all-clear yesterday.
Grandstands were also cleared for use yesterday after earlier
inspections confirmed various training tracks and the course
proper were undamaged.
The stable complexes and Riccarton Park Function Centre have
also been cleared for normal use.
There has been water damage to the public grandstand and some
130 windows were broken in various buildings. Crockery and
glassware were also broken.
• The dual-code meeting at Winton tomorrow week has been
changed to a harness meeting only.
There is a drainage problem with the Winton galloping track
after heavy rain on Monday made the surface too risky to race
on.
The Winton Harness Racing Club will go ahead with a 10-race
programme at Winton, president Murray Swain said.
It was to have raced with the Winton Jockey Club, which was
to stage eight races.
Gallop South Southland manager Doug Stewart said from
Kaikoura last night he had expected to hear from the New
Zealand Racing Board yesterday as to an alternative venue for
the thoroughbred meeting.
"I have not heard back from Thoroughbred Racing today so I am
hoping they will have made a decision by tomorrow."
"The board are considering four options for the galloping
meeting - at Gore next Wednesday, Thursday or Sunday or a
dual-code meeting at Gore next Friday.
