Racing: Pair may have say

Canterbury jockey Kylie Williams hopes she can find some synergy with Irish Bay when the pair combine in the open 1400m at Wingatui today.

Williams and the Tony and Lyn Prendergast-trained mare have combined six times this season. But, despite starting out well with second placings at Cromwell and Ashburton, the Williams/Irish Bay combination has not been a roaring success in their last four starts.

''She ran two seconds to Arietta when I first rode her, and every other time I've ridden her, something's gone wrong,'' Williams said.

''When Courtney [Barnes] has ridden her, she's got the perfect trip and gone really good.''

Irish Bay drops back from finishing seventh behind Emerald Queen in the South Island Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes last month, and Williams is not too worried by the wide draw of barrier 9.

''I would say Fiatt and Halo Buster will put a bit of speed on together, so hopefully she can get a cosy enough run and she can find the line like she has shown.''

Williams was impressed by Fast Eddie Slevin's South Island debut when he was just beaten by She's Payback at Timaru on March 20.

The Elusive City gelding was a recent addition to Peter Rudkin's team after being trained by Shaune Ritchie in the North Island.

''He drew wide and he was going good enough underneath me that I thought we'd keep going forward, otherwise we would get caught wide.

''The work he did early probably told in the last little bit and he only just got beaten.

''He's drawn wide again, but it's a bit of a run down the back straight so if he can get out and get across, on his last start you would have to think he will be in the money.''

Williams has been perplexed by the efforts of Annabel Rose who has been disappointing in her last few starts.

''She's a funny horse - you ride her and give her the perfect trip and she goes no good,'' she said.

''If you ride her bad, she seems to go better races. She's got the ability but it's up to her on the day whether she wants to do it or not.''

Ivanskavinskyskvar (race 4) is a commentator's nightmare, but Williams was quite pleased with what she discovered from him when he debuted with a tidy third at Wingatui on March 24.

Williams was conscious of making sure the Keeninsky gelding was not overawed on debut after he jumped well and landed close to the lead.

''He stuck on really well so would have learned a ton from that. If he comes on from that last start, he'll be hard to beat. He'll know what he's there for now.''

Williams has eight rides in total, with Croydon, Cracker, Delacroix and Hurikin all looking capable of placing at least, although she knows better than to expect wins based on how the form reads on paper.

''I'm not going to jinx myself - I'm just going to go to the races and ride them,'' she said.

''But Dunedin is my favourite track, so hopefully it goes good for me.''
