Leading from barrier rise to the finish line at the Forbury Park trials yesterday has set up Maldini for a race date at Forbury Park early next month.

The 6yr-old son of Sands A Flyin arrived at the Roxburgh stables of Geoff and Jude Knight after six starts, including a second and a third, for Templeton trainer Peter Holmes.

''He's a good stand-start horse so we'll probably look for a stand on the second [of October] or maybe at Northern Southland in the claiming race on the following week,'' Geoff Knight said.

''We bought him as a cheapie for a syndicate but he's not the worst.''

Driver Jonny Cox sent Maldini to the lead and kept the pace on for a solid time of 2.50.6, including a closing 800m of 59.7sec, in blustery conditions.

Falcon Asset has talent to draw on from her dam's side. Some of that speed showed as she qualified 0.4sec under the required time for the 2200m mobile pace.

Her dam, Mighty Asset, is a half-sister to 1999 Auckland Cup winner Happy Asset.

''She just wants a bit of time, so she'll go out for a wee spell now,'' Knight said.

''She's owned by a syndicate in Central Otago so we'll try and race her around Central Otago over Christmas.''

The Falcon Seelster filly was forced to make her own pace for most of the 2200m journey as stablemate Charlotte Rhodes struggled to keep up.

''Just doing all the work today didn't really suit her but she got the job done. She ran the gate and she has got a bit going for it, but she will have to improve a bit more yet because they go a lot faster in races.''

Pure Christian, who ran second to Maldini, will have one workout before racing at Forbury Park on October 2.

The trials also marked the last day in charge there for New Zealand Trotting Owners Association (Otago branch) secretary Kevin Brosnan.

He has resigned after 18 years in the role.
