Racing: Outside of front line no concern for Pulp Fiction

Pulp Fiction might never win as many awards as the Quentin Tarantino movie of the same name, but he is certainly near the top of the billing at Ascot Park today.

The smartly-bred son of Art Major and Joys Underworld is on a collision course to meet other promising 3yr-olds in the sires' stakes heat at Forbury Park on October 2. But firstly, he has to take care of business against the c1 pacers over 2200m today.

The Tony Stratford-trained colt is on the outside of the front line but, based on his two other starts this season which resulted in comfortable wins from wide draws, Stratford is not concerned.

''He drew the outside at Gore first up and he drew one or two from the outside at Winton the other day,'' Stratford said.

''But hey, in hindsight, racing in these lower races is not a bad thing because he's not having to burn early.

''He'll probably just settle early and if they're not going quick enough, he'll get round them. That'll be up to Dexter [Dunn, driver].''

Pulp Fiction has not added too much size to the frame which served him well as a 2yr-old. He ran fourth in both the Sapling Stakes and Kindergarten Stakes after winning on debut at Ascot Park in January.

''He's a colt, so he's thickened up a bit but he's no bigger than he was last year,'' he said.

''He was actually just below the best ones but up with them, too, as a 2yr-old.

''He did go 1.54 twice, so he's no mug. But he didn't have a lot of luck with draws that cost him in the group races that he started in.''

Star Singer should attract plenty of money in race 1 in what does not appear to be an overly strong c0 mares race.

The Badlands Hanover mare won a qualifying trial at the same track last week, beating the qualifying standard by 7sec.

''She went 2.48 and done it easy. She wouldn't have to improve much to be hard to beat tomorrow. As long as she gets a nice sit in behind them, she'll run up the straight as good as anything.''
