Racing: Withdrawal of Themightyquinn takes a little gloss off classic

The worst fears of ''Quinny'' fans were realised when Themightyquinn was withdrawn from the New Zealand Trotting Cup nominations on Tuesday.

The 10yr-old's mystery leg injury had his Western Australian trainer, Gary Hall sen, stumped enough to pull the pin on what was looming as the three-time Interdominion champion's first New Zealand Cup quest.

The withdrawal of the Southland-bred star robs the $700,000 classic of one of its leading lights, but there has been little other movement this week.

All horses from Adore Me, in fourth place downwards, move up one spot as a result of Themightyquinn's withdrawal.

Pembrook Benny's third placing in the Spring Cup at Alexandra Park on Friday leaves him in fifth spot, while Jimmy Johnstone moves into the top 15 as a result of Themightyquinn's absence.

Several pacers have the chance to improve their rankings this week in the Avon City Ford Cup, with all seven runners featuring in the cup nominations. Lewy Risk and Pure Power are two who could benefit hugely from a placing against the likes of Terror To Love and Smolda.
