Racing: One run at them plan for Jaccka Justy

Jaccka Justy is back to defend his Banks Peninsula Trotting Cup title at Motukarara tomorrow, but it is not going to be easy.

While the Jonny Cox and Amber Hoffman-trained trotter had to face the likes of group 1 winners Vulcan and Cyclone U Bolt in last year's group 3 trot, he has two rising stars and several veterans to contend with on the grass tomorrow.

Those rising stars are Waterloo Sunset, who finished second when favourite behind Kincaslough at Addington last night, and Habibti, who will start off the back mark of 20m.

The veterans include last-start winner Clover Don and The Fiery Ginga, who has built up a nice form line since returning from injury.

''It's probably as strong, but a different type of field to last year,'' Cox said on his way to Addington yesterday. But there's still a few nice ones in it.''

The 8yr-old's two starts since returning from a spell look good on paper, registering a fourth and fifth, although he was just fair in the straight behind Clover Don at Addington on September 12.

However, Cox has been happy enough with the gelding's efforts, especially as the races have not panned out to Jaccka Justy's normal pattern.

''I've probably driven him a wee bit upside down and used him a bit more in his races than what I did last year.

''Hopefully, if we can just get away and he can get one run at them, he might find the line a bit better.''

''He's just done the same strong work down the beach that he's been doing and seems to be enjoying it, so we'll hope for a good run on Sunday.''

Jaccka Justy has had just the two starts on a grass track, winning at Motukarara last year before he was dragged back by King Of Strathfield at Orari in November. Cox thinks the grass surface dulls the sheer brilliance of some of the others, evening out the field.

''Hopefully, it's not really hard and really fast and has got the sting out of it a wee bit and takes a bit of speed out of the rest.

''It certainly doesn't seem to worry him at all, with the way he finished off last year.''

Jaccka Justy is joined by Phil's Gift on the 10m unruly mark with only Stent and Habibti behind them, and Cox hopes his standing-start manners continue to stack up when the pressure is on.

''We said the same last year, but he bobbled away at the start. It's just how you catch him on the day, but nine times out of 10, he gets away.''
