Mauritius is known for its beautiful beaches and for being a popular holiday destination.

But Gosen Jogoo has found a preferred destination of his own in Balcairn after riding Querer to his first career win at Wingatui yesterday.

Jogoo (23) moved to the South Island in February from his home country of Mauritius after riding track work on the Indian Ocean island.

And his choice of new employers was right on the mark, as he joined the Balcairn stables of John and Karen Parsons.

''I was looking for a job and I saw a job online,'' Jogoo said.

''I applied and Mrs Karen gave me a chance - she helped with all my paperwork. They've looked after me.''

Jogoo's first ride was at Ashburton on September 12 and he was yet to threaten the line until yesterday's win in which he led early on Querer before pulling away to win the first of the 1100m maidens by 4 lengths.

Jogoo said the big difference between working in the racing industry in Mauritius and New Zealand was the attitude of the horses.

''Here horses are more relaxed. At home they're all nervous because they're not free like here in the paddocks.''
