Racing: Mare doesn't know how to go bad race

It seems the more you throw at Sureasyouwereborn, the more she gives.

The Tapanui mare has been traipsing around the country over the past six weeks going from rating 75 races to taking on open company in her past two starts.

Even a ratings hike from 75 to 83 after she ran second to Our Willie at Ascot Park on December 13 failed to stop the 4yr-old when she collected the $25,000 Otago Cup over 2200m at Wingatui yesterday.

''She doesn't know how to go a bad race - she keeps trying and she's tough,'' co-trainer Nikki Blatch said.

Yesterday's win over 2200m - taking her record to four wins and five minor placings from 16 starts - follows six previous efforts at 2000m or further, and Blatch thinks another furlong should not be a problem.

''I reckon she'll go more yet as long as she settles. Today, she didn't settle so that's why Kylie [Williams, jockey] had to go round but I reckon she'll go more and stay all day.''

The Dunedin Gold Cup (2400m) on Champions Day at Wingatui on January 31 is the next mid-term target.

''That's where we're thinking at the moment. Provided she comes through this good we'll head here. There's the Gore Cup in between because she'll probably need another run before that then the Dunedin Cup and we'll see what happens after that.''
