Graeme Anderson's plan of sneaking under the radar with Titan Banner could well pay off at the end of this month.

The Art Major colt is officially close to qualifying for the $150,000 3yr-old emerald division of the Harness Jewels, but Anderson expects a spot to be his in the coming days.

Titan Banner sits 13th on the list - the top 12 New Zealand earners in each category earn a start over a mile (1609m) at Ashburton.

He has earned $26,491 this year, less than $3000 behind the 12th-placed Shedontloveme.

''It was always the plan to go along under the radar and get in,'' Anderson said.

''I think one that's on the list has pulled out but not officially. We've got Christchurch on Saturday and Christchurch the following Friday to make sure of it, but it looks like we will sneak in.''

Titan Banner's quest to race for group 1 glory has been aided by the likes of southerners Tas Man Bromac, Pulp Fiction and I'm Full Of Excuses heading to the paddock, and northerner Hughie Green being pulled out.

''The plan was hopefully a lot of those ones who have been busy all year will pull out and that's how it's worked out,'' he said.

''It's not going to do any harm to go once round Ashburton on a sunny day and then he goes off to the paddock.''

Titan Banner reminded harness fans north of the Waitaki River of his abilities with an impressive win over Kept Under Wraps at Rangiora two weeks ago, although Anderson was not surprised by the effort.

''I always knew he was going to do that to be fair, '' he said.

''He did prove a point and [driver Dexter Dunn] sort of drove him to prove a point, I think.''

Anderson also has Onedin Mach on the cusp of a Jewels start, although he has slightly more work to do than Titan Banner.

The son of Mach Three sits in 15th spot in the 4yr-old emerald division and needs to win about $3300 before Oamaru on May 17 to get into the field.

He has been nominated for the c3-c6 pace at Forbury Park on Friday night, and an assignment at Addington the following Friday has been pencilled in.

''He needs probably $5000 to make sure of it, I'd say.

''If he was to win on Friday night, he'll be almost in too. But we'd still go to Addington [on May 15] anyway with him and that gives us two weeks to Jewels day which would be ideal.''

The Geoff and Jude Knight-trained Onedin Onyx sits 20th in Titan Banner's division.

Geoff Knight said the gelding would be travelling to Ashburton for the Jewels, but mainly as a travelling companion for Al Raza, who is comfortably in the top 12 for the 4yr-old diamond division.

Onedin Onyx will instead be targeted for a race at Ashburton on the Sunday, although Knight said if others pulled out before the cut-off time on May 22, the pacer would line up in the group 1 mile with all pacing runners receiving $3300.

A suitable race for Al Raza is proving elusive, so the Knights will probably give her a workout or a trial prior to her race at Ashburton.

''She's an easy horse to train, so we might just get her ready at home.''
