Racing: Claim to make difference

Weight relief in the form of Jake Lowry should give two hardy gallopers a helping hand at Oamaru today.

Lowry (17) teams up with News Flash (race 7) and Ishimine (race 8) on the nine-race card today and his 3kg apprentice claim will be welcomed by News Flash in particular.

The 5yr-old was handicapped to carry 60kg in the rating 75 1400m but Lowry's apprentice claim will help the son of Gallant Guru, a winner in his only start at Oamaru two weeks ago.

''It's always going to be a big help - it's hard for any horse to lug that around,'' Lowry said.

News Flash backed up his Oamaru win with a fourth behind Rumpelstiltskin in a small 1200m field at Winton on May 10 with Toni Direen on board.

''He's probably not quite a 1200m horse,'' Lowry said.

''He had a bit of weight on him that day [60kg] and he's got 3kg off tomorrow so that should be a big help to him. And 1400m should be up his alley.''

The Oamaru track was rated as a good3 surface yesterday afternoon, although showers were forecast overnight.

Either way, a firm track is no hindrance to News Flash who has won all five of his races on good or dead tracks.

''He's probably better in between the good and dead - he's pretty flexible.''

Lowry, like all good jockeys, will talk to the trainers of his four rides today for a guide on tactics, but thinks his draw of 10 should not be a major problem.

''We'll just have to see from the jump, really. He usually jumps pretty forward,'' he said.

''I wouldn't see him in front but maybe just off the pace.''

Ishimine will drop to a handicap of 54.5kg with Lowry's engagement which should suit the ''pretty honest'' mare.

''That's going to be a big help - she's been carrying heavy weights.

''Once again, I'll have to speak to connections but I've seen it's been forward in races. Whether they want it ridden that way I'm not sure but that's the way I see it.''

Lowry's other two rides are on Hold The Note (race 2) and Jachil (race 1).

Lowry was pleased to pick up the ride on Hold The Note. The White Robe Lodge-bred mare has shown promise in her six starts, winning one and running second at Winton last start.

''It was a pretty good effort last start and a few starts back at Invercargill when it really dominated and won.

''From the videotapes, it looks like it can get settled and get a nice run.''

Jachil is getting fit for jumping assignments but Lowry was happy with his trackwork the other day.

''I worked him the other day and his work was sound enough,'' he said.

''He's working towards the fences but he was convincing enough in his work the other day so he's probably a place chance.''
