Mosgiel trainer Darryn Simpson hopes it will not be a case of blinking and missing the rest of Blink's career after the trotter's maiden win on Thursday night.

The son of Sundon has been far from a simple ''train and win'' prospect for any of his trainers, be it Craig Buchan, who qualified him at Roxburgh as a 4yr-old in late 2012 or Ngaire Buchan, who tried the gelding two years ago.

''When I was training in here [at Forbury Park], I knew Ngaire was finishing with it, so we asked if we could have a go,'' Simpson said. He had seen enough in trials and workouts to have a crack with the close relation of Ronnie Coute, the 2007 3yr-old sales series trot champion.

''He's been a real headache but he's always had the ability - that's the worst thing about it,'' he said.

''If he didn't have the ability, he probably would have left the stable a long time ago.''

Simpson trains the 7yr-old for his partner, Kylie Smail, friends Bill and Susie Burt and farrier Billy McCraw.

The winter months of 2015 have been kind to Simpson, who prepared Cicada Jenerik to win at Oamaru in July when driven by Blair Orange - Blink's driver last night.

Both trotters took some time to clear maidens. Cicada Jenerik broke through at her 20th start, and Blink was having career start No 25 on Thursday.

''He's probably got more ability than Cicada Jenerik, so we'll see what happens.''
