Harness victory completes code treble

The Invercargill-based Tricode Racing Syndicates ticked off their missing win with Gotta Laugh's tough victory at Forbury Park last night.

The syndicates, established two years ago to give racing fans a chance of ownership in all three racing codes, had notched victories in the thoroughbreds - most successfully through Honor And Cherish - and the greyhound code, in which 2013 Sockburn Cup Thrilling Marty winner has been the flagship dog.

Syndicate manager Peter Kett said Gotta Laugh was leased from his good friend, Brian West, as is Soapbox, a Santanna Blue Chip filly who will have her first workout tomorrow.

Gotta Laugh's trainer Amber Hoffman said time in the paddock had been a big help for the Gotta Go Cullect mare after she had been only fair in her 3yr-old year.

''We gave her two starts but she was very naughty, so we put her in the paddock and she came back very different,'' Hoffman said.

''We sent her over to Craig Buchan's to get jogged up and it seemed to calm her down. She's still not really 100% but we're getting there. We've always known she's got the stamina, but it's just the brain and getting it out of her.''

Hoffman was back to greet the winner in the next race when Trick Star shot clear to win the c1-c5 trot.

The 8yr-old had been impressive winning at the Kurow meeting in August, but failed to flatter at Oamaru 11 days ago.

''He was quite disappointing at Oamaru but we got bloods done and they were out,'' she said.

''[Veterinarian] Pete Gillespie has been working on him a bit and we've just been riding him.''

Hoffman also took the overcheck off on the advice of driver Robbie Close.

''He's a very lazy big bugger for a Sundon, but it's good - he doesn't overdo himself.''

By contrast, Playboy's Brother can be boisterous, but a clean set of hooves behind the tapes was the big difference last night in the c0-c1 trot.

''He panics a wee bit when horses are around him and overraces,'' his Oamaru trainer, owner and breeder, Colin McKay said.

''If he can get a good draw and get away and get to the front, he can dominate the field. It's good to get that maiden win.''

Playboy's Brother is a full brother by Monarchy to Gorilla Playboy and maintains the 100% strike rate of his dam, Illustrious Tricks.

She has also produced Illustrious Queen and Final Secret - both race winners.

McKay said Gorilla Playboy would trial at Oamaru after last racing in January.
