Racing: Wild Bill on NZ Cup trail

For a New Zealand Cup-bound stayer, a 1600m open handicap in a fresh state might be a tall order.

Wild Bill doesn't think so.

The Joanne Hillis-trained 6yr-old was a dominant winner in Saturday's $15,000 Balclutha Cup at Wingatui, rounding up his rivals halfway down the straight to win by 2 lengths.

Wild Bill had a quiet run at the jumpouts 12 days ago and Hillis expected the son of Viking Ruler to need the run.

''I wasn't expecting that,'' she said.

''I was just hoping for a nice run and that was quite out there, really. Once he got that air, he was away.''

Saturday's distance is half of what Wild Bill will tackle if he makes it to the New Zealand Cup, but Hillis said the gelding had added some muscle to his frame.

''He's developed a wee bit more and he's quite a strong horse, really.

''I thought he was a wee bit fat [on Saturday], but it didn't appear to be that way.''

Saturday's win will solve one problem for Hillis, as his ratings adjustment should push him right on the cusp of the New Zealand Cup. However, she will stick with her original plan, which includes the Winton Cup on October 11.

''I had a few things mapped out, but I'll probably just keep on going with those. He probably needs a wee few miles under the belt.''
