Gore called off after one race

Drizzling rain on a rock-hard track made the Gore track unsafe after one race at the Gore Racing Club's meeting yesterday.

Mark Davidson, the chairman of stewards at yesterday's meeting, said the track had been upgraded to good2 after two hot days and was not far off a fast1 surface.

The first race was run and won by the Steve Tyler-trained Lady Jessica but jockeys exercised caution when they returned after race 1.

"They all said it was very firm but they all said if we get a shower of rain on this, it will be slippery,'' Davidson said.

Some light drizzle fell after race 1, so officials put the meeting back one race (35 minutes) to give the track time to dry.

"Just as we were about to run race 2, we got another quite heavy shower and that was enough to make it wet. There was a wee bit of clover in the track and water, clover and a firm track just do not compute.''

The stipendiary stewards led the process, but Davidson said trainers and jockeys were in agreement with the decision.

"There hadn't been an incident on the track, but I was concerned enough not to put them out there.''
