Brian West, the Coes Ford (Mid-Canterbury) owner-breeder,
continued his run of success when La Soiree won the race for
2yr-old fillies at Wyndham yesterday.
West, operating as Studholme Bloodstock, won the $180,000
Yearling Sales Pace for 3yr-old fillies at Addington on
Saturday with Lancome.
He also won at Auckland on Friday night with Secret Potion.
He bought Lancome for $40,000 when she was offered at the New
Zealand Premier Yearling Sale by Jack Smolenski.
He races La Soiree with Peter Smith and "Winky" Foley, both
of Kumeu.
They bred La Soiree, a filly by Dream Away from L'Escalier.
They also bred a colt by McArdle from the mare and will offer
him at the premier yearling sale in two weeks.
They had L'Escalier on loan from Ray Hazlett, of Winton, who
bred Secondstospare (five wins) and L A Operative (six) from
the OK Bye mare.
Foley and Smith had bred L'Escalier.
They returned her to Hazlett in foal to Washington VC.
"I have known Peter and `Winky' for about 20 years since I
looked after a mare for them. We have been involved in about
eight mares," West said.
West bred Secret Potion, who is by Courage Under Fire from
Putting On The Glitz.
Secret Potion has won four of her eight starts.
West will offer her half-brother (by Western Terror) at the
premier sale.
Lancome, Secret Potion and La Soiree are trained by Mark
Purdon and Grant Payne, who are back on top in the New
Zealand trainers' premiership after five wins at four venues
since Friday.
They have 61 wins this season, one ahead of Steven Reid and
Graeme Rogerson.
They also won with I Can Doosit at Auckland and Doli at
Forbury Park.
