Rowing: Otago duo named for Olympics

Hamish bond (North End) and Fiona Bourke (University) are booked for the Olympics in London, while Fergus Fauvel (University) has a chance if the men's eight wins the qualifying regatta in Switzerland.

The national selectors named 39 rowers in the squad which is made up of 11 pre-qualified boats and two boats - the men's eight and men's lightweight four - that will attempt to qualify in the Last Chance regatta at Lucerne.

It is the largest New Zealand rowing squad named for the Olympics.

There is a change in the women's lightweight double sculls from the 2011 crew that qualified for London. Julia Edward replaces Otago's Lucy Strack (North End) and will partner Louise Ayling.

Strack was unlucky to miss selection because she has been sidelined for the last few months with a back injury.

She made a late dash for selection by winning a silver medal in the lightweight single sculls, behind Edward, at the New Zealand championships at Lake Karapiro and won the B final in the heavyweight event.

Fauvel (25) has been the big mover. He only started rowing four years ago in his first year at the University of Otago.

He was a novice when he reached the semifinals of the club single sculls at the New Zealand championships at Lake Karapiro in 2008.

Fauvel grew up on a Wairarapa Bush sheep and beef farm and played rugby for fun at Wairarapa College.

He travelled to Europe with the elite team last year and has had the support of the University of Otago high performance rowing programme over the past four years.

Fauvel jumped to the notice of the national selectors with his ergometer score for the 2000m of 5min 50sec last year. It was the fourth-best in the history of New Zealand rowing behind world champions Mahe Drysdale, Eric Murray and Hamish Bond.

Heading the New Zealand team for London is five times world single sculls champion Mahe Drysdale, who will contest his third Olympic regatta.

The three-time world champions men's pair of Hamish Bond and Eric Murray are also confirmed, as are two-time world champions in the women's pairs, Juliette Haigh and Rebecca Scown, and two-time world men's double sculls champions Nathan Cohen and Joseph Sullivan.

The 2009 world champions Storm Uru and Peter Taylor will compete in the men's lightweight double sculls.

There are nine current and former elite level world champions in the New Zealand team.

Emma Twigg, the world silver medallist in 2010 and bronze medallist last year, has been named in the women's single sculls.

Fi Paterson and Anna Reymer, bronze medallists in 2011, will remain in the women's double sculls.
