Rowing: Scott into sculls final

She is a lightweight rower but still managed to reach the final of the heavyweight girls under-18 single sculls at Lake Ruataniwha yesterday. Scott finished fourth in her semifinal in 8min 14.74sec at the Maadi Cup yesterday.

She will be joined in the eight-strong final by Emma Winders (Columba College), another lightweight sculler who finished fourth in her semifinal.

Two Otago crews reached the finals of girls under-18 lightweight double sculls.

The Dunstan crew of Sydney Cook and Macaela Turfus came third in their semifinal and the Wakatipu High School crew of Merida Sowry and Charlie Turner was fourth in the other semifinal.

In the girls under-17 heavyweight double sculls, the St Kevin's combination of Julia Fauth and Sydney Telfer won their semifinal in 8min 54.77sec. It was the faster of the two semifinals.

Eliza Adams and Zoe Sabonadiere (St Hilda's) were runners-up in the other semifinal and had the third-fastest time of the two heats.

In the girls under-15 double sculls, Lily Graham and Loren Cunningham (Waitaki Girls') were second in the semifinal and Lili Sabonadiere and Cortney Shea (St Hilda's) third.

Anna O'Leary (Kavanagh) reached two single sculls finals. She was fourth in the girls under-16 semifinal and third in the under-17 event.

In the girls under-18 heavyweight double sculls, the St Kevin's combination of Sydney Telfer and Tiana Mihaere was fourth and the Wakatipu pair of Monique Lynes and Jordan Murphy third. The St Hilda's quadruple sculls (stroke Claudia Maker) was third in the semifinal.

Lucy Geddes and Ella Galletly (Dunstan) gained the second-fastest semifinals time in the girls under-16 double sculls in 8min 37.22sec.

The best boys performance in the semifinals came from Jack O'Leary (Kavanagh), who dominated the race from the start and won the boys under-18 single sculls in 7min 19.41.

He looks odds-on to win the gold medal today because his time was 5sec better than the other crews.

Four Otago scullers qualified for the finals of the boys under-16 single sculls. Nathan Redai (Mount Aspiring) had the fastest time of 8min 27.92sec and was followed by school mate Riley Bruce. Bruce also qualified in the boys under-17 single sculls.

The other qualifiers were Tom Grave (John McGlashan) and Charlie Wallis (St Kevin's).

Bruce and Redai gained third- fastest time in the boys under-16 double sculls and Grave and Woody Kirkwood second-fastest with 7min 09.59sec.

Other boys crews to reach the finals were the Otago Boys' under-18 four, Wakatipu under-17 four, Waitaki Boys' under-15 four, Wakatipu under-18 lightweight double sculls, Waitaki Boys' under-15 double sculls, Wakatipu under-17 double sculls and John McGlashan quadruple sculls.
