While Otago finished second at the interprovincial championships at Lake Ruataniwha at the weekend, it was competing against the elements as well as Southland and Canterbury.

Southland won the competition with 37 points, followed by Otago (33) and Canterbury (27).

Bitterly cold conditions hindered the event, resulting in the cancellation of racing on Saturday and two full regatta programmes being held on Sunday.

In howling winds, the more sheltered inside lanes had an advantage, while some races were shortened to complete the racing.

Otago entered 24 crews in 18 events, winning six of them.

The women's under-20 scullers coached by Oamaru Rowing Club's Owen Gould were the standout Otago crew.

Maysie Scott, Sydney Telfer, Karley Wilden-Palms and Chelsea Gorton won the coxless quad, while Scott and Telfer also won the double scull.

Scott continued her winning form in the single sculls, finishing in 4min 41.30sec, while Wilden-Palms finished third in 4min 47sec.

Johannah Kearney and Hazel Cunliffe won gold in the women's open pair and combined with Anna Watson-Taylor and Kelsi Parker to win the open coxless quad.

Andrew Potter and Jordan Parry won the men's open pair in trying conditions.
