Rowing: Oamaru pair looking good for South Island champs

Oamaru's Maysie Scott and Sydney Telfer will look to make it three from three at the South Island championships at Lake Ruataniwha this weekend.

The pair are unbeaten since winning the under-20 double scull at the interprovincial championships at Lake Ruataniwha last October, and are favoured to keep their streak going as the rowing season builds momentum.

After winning the girls under-20 double scull at the Otago championships at Lake Ruataniwha last month in 8min 01.99sec, the pair will line up in the girls under-19 double this weekend.

They will then team up with Julia Fauth, Micaela Irvine and coxswain Jess Mulligan for the girls under-19 coxed four, which they won at the Otago championships in a thrilling finish over Invercargill's Hannah Lilley, Ariana Mirfin, Moira MacDonald, Nakita Tupoutoa and cox April Miller.

On recent form, at least five Otago rowers are in the mix in the women's club single.

At the Canterbury championships a fortnight ago, which was shortened by bad weather, Riley Homan (Wanaka) qualified with the second-fastest time for the A final, while Lucy Geddes (Dunstan), Scott, Karley Wilden-Palms (North End) and Hazel Cunliffe (Otago University Rowing Club) also qualified.

Wilden Palms is also a part of North End's coxless women's quad looking to go one better than its second-place finish at the Otago championships.

Wanaka brothers Eachann and Riley Bruce will race together in the men's club double, before facing off against each other in the men's club single.

Riley got the better of his older brother at the Otago championships last month, but Eachann turned the tables a fortnight ago to beat his brother and qualify for the A final, which was canned due to poor weather.

Otago Rowing Club's under-17 boys pair Tom Grave and Woody Kirkwood will look to back up their win at the Canterbury championships, while Cromwell's boys novice double combination of Matt Anderson and Jack Ryan will also be one to look out for.

About 1100 rowers from 38 clubs will compete over the weekend.

Racing runs from 7am today until 5.20pm, and 7am to 2.30pm tomorrow.
