Rowing: Otago, Oamaru crews in advance

Otago and Oamaru crews have done well in the opening two days of the New Zealand Rowing Championships in Twizel.

Hazel Cunliffe and Natasha Bonham-Carter (Otago University Rowing Club) won their heat in 8min 7.65sec and have made the final of the women's club pair.

In the men's under-22 pair, Andrew Potter (OURC) and Timaru's Cameron Crampton finished third in their heat in 7:08.48 to make the final.

Otago Rowing Club's Bryce Abernethy (7 min 28.32sec) finished second in heat 1 behind New Zealand elite lightweight Adam Ling (7min 14.41) and will contest the men's premier lightweight single, while Oamaru's Riku Koyama, Jared Brenssell, Osca Pederson, Angus Harper and cox Jess Mulligan won their heat in the men's novice quad and have booked a berth in the final.

Brenssell and Pederson also teamed up in the novice double and are through to the semifinals.

SRPC's Anna Watson-Taylor and Oamaru's Maysie Scott are through to the semifinals of the women's under-20 single.

Scott also linked up with Julia Fauth, Sydney Telfer and Micaela Irvine to win their heat in the women's club quad, while North End Rowing Club crew Eliza Adams, Juliette Alm-Lequeux, Karley Wilden-Palms and Emma Wallace placed third in heat 2 and have qualified for the semifinals.

Oamaru's Mark Taylor placed fourth in the repechage, which was good enough for a semifinals spot in the men's under-20 single.

Koyama and Harper won their heat in the men's novice double and three rowers from the region - Charlie Wallis, Riley Bruce and Eachann Bruce - are through to the semifinals of the men's club single.
