There was no surprise when Hamish Bond again won the Otago rower of the year award at the weekend.

Bond (North End) was named the winner for the fourth year running at the annual awards at the Otago Rowing Club, meaning his name is now etched on the trophy seven times since 2004.

The 29-year-old seven-time world champion and Olympic gold medallist is no stranger to winning awards.

He and Eric Murray, who are unbeaten in the men's coxless pair since teaming up in 2009, won the supreme Halberg Award for the second time in three years in February.

Representing Southern RPC, Bond won gold in the men's coxless pair and coxless four at the national rowing championships at Lake Ruataniwha in February, before adding a silver in the premier single sculls and a bronze in the coxed eight.

Fiona Burke (Otago University Rowing Club), who will attempt to qualify the women's single scull boat for the Rio Olympics next year, and Bryce Abernethy (Otago Rowing Club) were the other nominations.

Maysie Scott (Oamaru) beat Riley Bruce (Wanaka) to be named club rower of the year.

Scott had a fine summer, winning a raft of medals at the Otago and South Island championships, before winning gold in the under-19 double scull and bronze in the coxed four at the national championships.

Macaela Turfus (Dunstan High School) and Bruce (Mt Aspiring College) were named schoolgirl and schoolboy rowers of the year.

Turfus was dominant in the double all season, winning the under-17 race at every major regatta.

Bruce fended off stiff opposition in Mitchell Anderson (King's High School), Woody Kirkwood (John McGlashan College) and Mark Taylor (Waitaki Boys' High School) to win the schoolboy rower of the year award.

Bruce won gold in the under-17 single scull at the South Island secondary school championships at Lake Ruataniwha in March, before settling for silver at the Maadi Cup at Lake Karapiro later in the month.

He was selected in the South Island under-18 team in the double and four.

Simon Smith (Dunstan) was named coach of the year for his work with the under-15 and under-17 girls, who combined to win 13 medals at the Otago, South Island club, South Island secondary school and Maadi Cup championships.
